LOGAN—Smithfield resident Joshua Lee Thalman, 28, pleaded guilty Nov. 3 in 1st District Court to three misdemeanors in a domestic violence case. He will be sentenced Nov. 30 at 9 a.m.

The charges, assault by a prisoner, a class A misdemeanor, and assault and domestic violence in the presence of a child, both class B misdemeanors, were part of a plea bargain that reduced the charges from eight original counts incurred during an incident Sept. 3. Thalman was at the home of his ex-girlfriend, Aimee Boyce and their 8-year-old daughter. Two neighbors contacted the police, complaining of a verbal confrontation in the home of Boyce. Law enforcement officers came and spoke to Boyce and Thalman. Thalman appeared to be “extremely intoxicated,” said state prosecutor Tony C. Baird.

Baird told the court that Thalman had spent the night at Boyce’s home, fallen asleep, and awoke angry. “The defendant broke several things, including a light fixture. He pushed her [Boyce] and even punched a wall at one point, while the daughter was present in the house,” Baird said.

Thalman was arrested and taken to the Cache County Jail. While he was in a holding cell having his handcuffs removed, he pulled his hands back, broke a key, and caused a cut to a deputy’s hand, Baird said.

Thalman was released the following day on $2,000 bail. The same day a protective order was enacted, preventing Thalman from contact with Boyce or their child. The order will remain in place for the duration of Thalman’s proceedings unless modified by the court.
