Season Preview: Sky View Girls’ Basketball
Lady Bobcats Feature Returning Experience, New Talent for 2009-2010 Basketball Season
SMITHFIELD—A talented and experienced Lady Bobcat team is returning two varsity starters and a seasoned bench from last year’s team that went deep into the playoffs. Seniors Amy Andrus and Nicole Hansen return as starters for Sky View.
Head Coach Paul Hansen said that the Sky View Girls’ Basketball team has high hopes for this season.
“We just plan on winning one game at a time until we win them all, win the region,” said Hansen. “And the expectations are high for us to win a state championship, so we’re after that as well.”
State championships don’t come easy, and the Lady Bobcats know that first hand. Last season they were undefeated going into the semi-finals, where they lost to Springville High School, a team with three losses at that point.
The keys to success this year, said Sky View senior Nicole Hansen, is to progress “game by game, win by win.”
“[We] just [need] to stay positive and work for the state championship,” she said.
According to Amy Andrus, team work will play a major factor in Sky View’s success this year. “We get along really well, on and off the court, so we’re all friends,” said Andrus.
She continued: “We mesh together great as a team. We’re a pretty unselfish team. We pass the ball a lot.”
Coach Hansen said he’s excited, not only for this season, but for the future of the program at Sky View.
“We’ve only lost one sophomore game here in the last three years,” said Coach Hansen. “[We] haven’t lost any junior varsity games. They’ve been 60-0, so JV is real good.”
He’s also appreciative of his assistant coaches. “They’re a great asset to the program,” he said.
The Lady Bobcats thrive off of the community support. “We get supported real well” by the community, said Coach Hansen.
Sky View fans “know the type of product that we put out on the floor, and it’s an exciting brand of basketball to watch,” he said.
The Lady Bobcats open up preseason play vs. Skyline High School on Nov. 24. Sophomores play at 3:30 p.m., JV at 5:15 p.m., and Varsity kicks off the season at 7:00 p.m.
