Lady Bobcats dominate in the lopsided matchup against Logan
Smithfield—With a 26-point, 16-rebound night, Amy Andrus led the Lady Bobcats to a dominating win Tuesday night over Cache County rival Logan, 60-34. Dianne Washington also made a big offensive contribution with 16 points, 12 of which came from behind the three-point arc.
“We wanted to come out and make a statement,” said Sky View head coach Paul Hansen, “so practice was very focused on setting our tempo and playing Sky View Basketball.”
With the score tied at 2-2 in the first quarter, the Lady Bobcats put some distance between themselves and the Lady Grizzlies. Andrus and Washington sparked the Sky View offense, scoring the team’s first 14 points to take a 12-point lead into the second quarter, 14-2.
Sky View’s defense smothered the Lady Grizzlies all night long, holding Logan to two first-quarter points and five third-quarter points.
“The key to defense is footwork and communication,” said Hansen. “You have to want to play defense and tonight we had a team that really focused and clamped down on Logan.”
The Lady Grizzlies found their offensive groove in the second quarter. With Brittany Lamborn and Melissa Curtis leading the way with four points each, and three other Logan players scoring points, the Lady Grizzlies were able to put 13 points on the board in the second quarter.
But that wasn’t enough to keep pace with Sky View, who chalked up 15 points during the same period. Maury Beorchia hit a three-point shot for her lone points of the night, while Jessica Duffin, Aubry Boehme and Nicole Hansen all added points in the quarter to extend the lead to 14, 29-15
It was more of the same in the second half. Andrus, Hansen and Washington combined for 16 third-quarter points, while the Sky View defense tightened up, holding Logan to five points, a layup from Tonya Anderson and a three-pointer from Kylie Jackson.
At one point during the fourth period, the Lady Bobcats held a 30-point lead before Hansen gave the starters some rest and put in the JV squad. Sky View cruised the whole second half to win easily.
Coach Hansen said that Andrus’s effort was a testament to the team’s attitude.
“[Andrus] is very capable of putting up a lot of points, but we don’t really expect it,” he said. “We want her to play a team game, and when she gets big numbers it reflects the attitude that Amy and the team has.”
“Tonight it happened to really go Amy’s way,” he added.
The Lady Bobcats (13-3) will host the Box Elder Bees (3-13) on Feb. 4 at 7 p.m. at Sky View High School.
Hansen says the focus this week is “to play hard and go to the gym knowing that everyone, including ourselves, expects us to win.”
“So [we are going to] show up and do the little fundamentals that make us a great team,” he said.
