Sky View Girls win state 200 medley relay
Sky View girls started off strong with the win in the first event, the 200 yard medley relay with a time of 1:53:28 — Mickensi Didericksen, Shaelynn Bodrero, Cassie Wiser, and Laura Mortenson. Logan took 2nd and East 3rd. The SV boys were strong in their 200 medley relay too. Zakk Rhodes, Daniel Cox, Nate Gregory, and Brett Mortenson took 4th place. Mountain Crest won and set a state record with their time 1:37.26.
Zakk Rhodes improved his time in the 200 free to displace 2 swimmers in the first heat and took 8th in that event. Laura Mortenson swam 4th in the 50 free (25.74). Brett Mortenson proved that strong swimming runs in their family by placing 13 in the 50 free. We had a very strong showing from the Sky View girls with 3 girls competing in the 100 yard butterfly. Mickensi Didericksen (1:04.91) took 4th, Cassie Wiser 11th and Chloe Patterson 14th. Which meant they all scored points for our team. Nate Gregory also swam the 100 fly and dropped nearly 2 seconds to get 58.74 and place 12th in that event. Laura Mortenson (57.66) dropped time to take 5th in the 100 yard free.
The girls team in the 200 free relay — Shaelynn Bodrero, Amber Maxfield, Cassie Wiser, and Laura Mortenson — shaved off time to get 1:46.47 and take 6th place and earn on place on the awards stand. The boys 200 relay — Zayn Rhodes, Braiden Lambson, Lance Devirty, and Andy Chaparro — got 1:34.53 to take 8th place in their event.
We again had three SV girls compete in the 100 yard breaststroke: Shaelynn Bodrero (1:01.60) 2nd Mickensi Didericksen (1:04.38) 4th, Cassie Wiser (1:09.31) 16th.
Zakk Rhodes took 3rd (55.87) in the 100 yard backstroke.
Shae Bodrero, only a sophomore, took 2nd in the 100 breaststroke (1.10.45). Stewart Wood (1:09.32) and Daniel Cox (1:06.32) both qualified to compete at state in the 100 breaststroke. Daniel took 11th.
The whole meet was touch and go to see who would be in the top 6. The girls were actually 2nd to Logan after the 100 breast but couldn’t hold on to that place and ended up 5th after the 400 free relay. The top 2nd through 6th place were all within 18 points before that event. Logan girls were far ahead throughout the entire meet.
Nearly all the swimmers dropped time so that was fun to see.
They awarded the academic all-state winners before the start of the Sat. meet. We had 2 girls qualify; Ashley Lee and Laura Mortenson. To qualify to earn this they had to swim for all their high school years and also keep a 3.75 GPA or higher. Then they took the top 10 girls and top 10 boys. The average GPA was 3.99.
