Lady Bobcats pounce on the Bonneville Lakers
The Sky View Lady Bobcats made Senior Night a memorable one, thrashing the Bonneville Lady Lakers, 71-25. Senior forward Amy Andrus posted a double-double to lead the Lady Cats, scoring 21 points and pulling down 17 rebounds.
“She (Andrus) likes to go get it, and she’s really turned it on in the last three weeks. She’s big, she’s strong, and she’s fast. She’s a good player,” Sky View head coach Paul Hansen said.
Senior guard Nicole Hansen chipped in 12 points and nearly missed a double-double, dishing out nine assists. Hansen and Andrus along with Forward/Center Aubry Boehme, Forward/Guard Diane Washington, Forward/Guard Jenessa Crafts, and Guard/ Forward Taylor Rock are a group of seniors who have been together a long time.
“That group of seniors has been together and with me since 5th grade,” Hansen said.
The Lady Bobcats showed their experience together, starting the game strong and their high-powered offense proved to be too much for the Lady Lakers. Andrus scored eight points in the first quarter and Washington sank a pair of 3’s. Washington finished the game with nine points on three 3-pointers. The Bobcats led, 22-10, at the end of the first quarter and amped up their defense for the remainder of the game, holding the Lakers to five points in each subsequent quarter.
The second half was much the same offensively for the Lady Cats. Patient, methodic play led to easy buckets and the Lady Bobcats shared the ball well the whole night, finishing with 16 team assists.
Earlier in the season, Taylor Rock injured her ACL and tonight she played for the first time since the injury. Coach Hansen kept Rock on the Bobcat’s offensive end, leaving a four-to-five disadvantage on the Bobcat’s defensive end. This proved to be a good strategy, as the Lady Lakers still struggle to score even with the advantage of one less defender. Rock stayed parked around the right wing of the three-point line for the Lady Bobcats and hit two bombs in about four minutes of play.
After three quarters of actions, the Lady Bobcats led, 53-20, and Coach Hansen decided to let the Sophomore and JV players have a chance to play. The deep Lady Bobcats bench scored 13 points on the night, more than half of the Lady Lakers total points.
A win is a win in any sport but Coach Hansen said that tonight’s game wasn’t very emotional due to great expectations for the Lady Bobcats. Currently they are ranked fourth in 4A in the Deseret News Prep Rankings, they also hold a commanding lead of second place, and should get a good seed in the State Tournament.
Coach Hansen said,“I think we’re ready to make good run. We’ve been to the final four three years in a row and that’s where we intend to be back again. I’m sure that’s where these guys want to be. We’re expected to win and the girls expect to win. We’re having a good time.”
Up next for the Lady Bobcats is the final game of the season against Valley-rival Logan High Lady Grizzlies. The Lady Cats disposed of the Lady Grizz easily both times this season. Nicole Hansen scored 15 points against the Lady Grizz, the Lady Cats came out victorious in Smithfield on Jan. 14th, 55-36. On Feb. 2nd in Logan, Amy Andrus exploded for 26 points and 16 rebounds to lead the Lady Bobcats over the Lady Grizz, 60-34.
Tip-off against the season finale against the Lady Grizzlies is set for 7 p.m. on Feb. 18th.
