Bobcats dominate Panthers
Just seconds after the Bobcats won the tipoff, senior guard Grayson Moore found junior center Casey Oliverson in an alley-oop dunk for the first score of the game. The play set the tone for how dominant Sky View’s post players would be in the 60-39 win over Pine View Friday night.
Oliverson had 16 points and fellow big man Jordan Nielson had 19, the pair combining for more than half of their team’s points in the victory, disproving the myth that Sky View has only one threat down low. Sky View head coach Kevin Anderson said his team needs to get that kind of balanced scoring.
“Jordan steps up,” Anderson said. “He plays the boards well, and around the basket well.”
Nielson had 11 of his points in the fourth quarter, when opponents generally focus on Oliverson.
“We were just playing as a team,” Nielson said. “(Our guards) were just cutting and they’d dish it for an easy basket.”
Moore led the Bobcats in assists with 6 to go along with his 7 points.
“Grayson is really playing well,” Anderson said, adding how Moore is showing signs of a mature basketball player. “Making good decisions and hitting the open guy.”
With a 24-17 lead after halftime, the Bobcats withstood a Pine View attack led by guard Darren Powers, who scored 14 in the contest. Anderson said it is difficult to guard a player who can shoot as well as drive to the hoop and score so easily.
“He shoots the ball, he’s quick,” Anderson said. “We had to know where he was.”
Sky View shredded the Panther full court press down the stretch and put the game out of reach with easy fast break layups and foul shots, hitting 9-11 from the charity stripe.
The win comes at an important time for Sky View, after their 4 point loss to Snow Canyon the night before 46-50.
“We just came out strong with emotion to prove it was a fluke last night,” Moore said.
39 is the lowest number of points the Bobcats have allowed in the young season; Anderson said the team’s defensive effort was better than it was against Snow Canyon.
“There was a big difference in energy and excitement,” Anderson said. “We were able to get going early.”
With the win, Sky View improves to 3-1 on the season while Pine View drops to 2-2. The Bobcats will next travel to Idaho to play Highland on Friday, Dec. 17 at 7:30 p.m.
