Lady Bobcats hold off Box Elder Bees
The Lady Bobcats outlasted a third quarter comeback by Box Elder Thursday night, winning by a score of 60-47. Junior guard Dannicka Webb had 5 points in the first quarter to get Sky View started with a 17-6 lead. Bobcat leading scorer Tara Goldman said her team worked hard to get that lead.
“It helped us win,” Goldman said, who had 13 points in the game. “It was fun, we worked hard and tried to get it.”
Late in the second quarter and into the third, Box Elder mounted a comeback, led most notably by shooting guard Kaylee Walker who had 14 points total. Walker hit two straight 3-pointers and had a block near the end of the half, bringing her team back to 31-21.
Coming out of the locker room, Box Elder executed their offensive game plan very well, allowing Walker to hit two quick field goals to continue the momentum swing. The Bees also toughened up their defense, extending to an aggressive full court press to get to within 5 partway through the third quarter, 36-31.
“We lost our control. We couldn’t follow through on our shots,” Goldman said of the Box Elder comeback. “In the beginning (of the press) we started out slow, but pulled through.”
The comeback would be as close as the Bees would get, as Sky View figured out how to shred the press and went on a 7-0 run to close out the third quarter 43-31.
The theme of the Box Elder offense late in the game seemed to center on forward Katie Vincent, who led all scorers with 21 points, 8 coming in the last stanza. Vincent would post up in the middle of the Sky View zone, get the ball and turn to shoot from the top of the key, drawing the foul and earning a pair of free throws. Vincent went 13-16 from the line in the game, adding 8 points from the field.
In the fourth quarter the early Sky View lead turned out to be too much to overcome for the Bees and from there the Lady Bobcats slowly dragged out the victory from the foul line, winning 60-47.
The win brings the Lady Bobcats to 3-3 and 1-0 in region play. They travel to 2-5 Snow Canyon on Friday, Dec. 17 to play at 5:15 p.m.
