Lady Bobcats start strong but come up short against the Mustangs

The Lady Cats started out strong against the Mountain Crest Mustangs, Wednesday night keeping the score close through the first half, but were unable to reign in the Mustangs in the second half, losing a good battle to Mountain Crest 65-53.

The first quarter defense of the Sky View girls’ basketball team was tough and held Mountain Crest to just 8 points. Decent shooting for the Bobcats put Sky View up 8-10 at the close of the first quarter. The Cats maintained the lead for much of the second quarter before the Mustangs pulled ahead as the second quarter came to a close. The score going into half was 26-22 Mountain Crest.

The third quarter proved to be the undoing of the Bobcats as the Mustangs held them to just seven points. Tough defense by the Lady Stangs and poor shooting by the Cats ended up being too much for the Bobcats to overcome as the Mustangs put up 20 points in the third quarter. The clock ticked to a close with the Mustangs up 46-29.

Sky View battled valiantly in the fourth quarter outscoring Mountain Crest 24-19, and enjoyed a brief lead in the final period. However the Bobcats could not overcome the third quarter, finishing the game with the Mustangs on top 65-53.

Mountain Crest was lead in scoring by Jordi Wilden who put up 25 points many of her points coming from the free throw line as she finished the night 17-of-19 from the stripe. She was followed Karlee Kartchner with 14 points, making 6-of-9 free throws, and Juliet McCann with 10 points, hitting 2 from behind the 3 point line, and was a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line.

Sky View point leaders were Dannika Webb who scored 24 points hitting 3 field goals and draining 6 three pointers throughout the game. Webb’s fourth quarter points kept the Bobcats in the hunt as she scored 15 of her points in that period including 3 of her 6 from downtown. Other’s scoring well for the Bobcats included Maddie Day who added 10 points, hitting 5 from the field, while missing on two free throws. Tara Goldman put up 8 points, nailing 6-of-8 from the free throw line.

The Lady Cats had a few players that got into foul trouble. Cortney Ballard, Tara Goldman, and Linsey Walker all fouled out in the fourth quarter. Dannika Webb, Maddie Day, and Jessica Duffin finished the game with four fouls a piece.

Sky View will hit the road playing a pair of away games; first at Bonneville on Thursday, January 6th, then making the short trip to play valley rivals in the Logan Grizzlies on Tuesday the 11th of January. The Lady Cats will be back in action at home on Thursday, January 13th against the Box Elder, Bees. All games are scheduled to start at 7:00 p.m.
