Sky View boys lose a heartbreaker to valley rivals Mountain Crest
Sky View played before a near capacity crowd Wednesday night and went down swinging but came up one point and a couple seconds short of pulling off a victory. It was just not to be as Mountain Crest came out on top 49-48.
The Bobcats and Mustangs began the battle from the opening buzzer as the score bounced back and forth for the full eight minutes. The Mustangs pulled ahead by two with 2:16 left in the first quarter, but the Bobcats continued to work to the basket and scored. Stingy defense by both teams kept the score low and when the buzzer blared at the end of the first quarter found the teams all tied up at eight points-a-piece.
The second quarter was more of the same as the evenly matched teams see-sawed their way to lead changes, and scrapped their way to a 20-20 tie with 1:15 left in the second. That score would hold and send the teams to the locker room.
The crowd was entertained by the Cheerleaders and the Vistauns at half time while the two teams made adjustments and strategized during the break.
The difference in the game was in the third quarter. Mountain Crest put up twelve points shooting five 2-pointers, and went 2-of-4 from the free throw line. Sky View put up eleven points hitting a couple of 2-pointers, while draining three 3-pointers. Unfortunately the Bobcats went 0-for-2 from the free throw line and that one point deficit would be the difference in the game.
Both teams put up seventeen points in the fourth quarter. The Mustangs lead for a majority of the quarter but Sky View was relentless in their pursuit bringing the score to within one on a few occasions. Eddy Hall who scored thirteen points for the Mustangs, hit one 3-pointer in the game and went 6-for-9 from the free throw line. A pair of missed free throws by Hall as the game came down to the wire kept the Bobcats within one point as the clock ticked down to 18.5 seconds in the final period. As the Bobcats brought the ball down fighting for the last shot the relentless defense of the Mustangs forced a wayward shot by the Bobcats. The Cats rebounded and a trio of put-backs were would not fall and the would be win slipped from the Bobcats grasp as the buzzer rang.
Leading scorers for the Mustangs were Troy Pickett who had fifteen points with five field goals and a 3-pointer, followed by Hall with his thirteen points.
The Bobcats were led in scoring by Riley Knowles who had thirteen points hitting three 3-pointers and was a perfect 2-for-2 from the free throw line. Grayson Moore had twelve points that included a slam dunk that brought the crowd to its feet in the third period. Moore had a pair of 3-pointers and went 4-for-4 from the free throw line.
