Sky View grapplers score big heading into annual Bobcat Brawl
The Sky View boys wrestling team squared off against Ogden High School last night and in an overwhelming victory out scored Ogden 84-0.
The Ogden team only brought nine wrestlers with them, two of which were junior varsity wrestlers. Sky View’s JV team registered pins in both matches. The seven wrestlers that competed for the Sky View varsity team pinned their opponents in every match resulting in a 42-0 score. When the matches that were forfeited were factored in the Sky View team finished with a team score of 84-0.
The Bobcat Brawl is scheduled to start today at 3 p.m. where eight teams will compete this evening and all day tomorrow. Tonight the brawl will host three rounds of matches and tomorrow there will be four rounds of matches. The teams will have a junior varsity match going on at the same time that varsity is wrestling on an adjoining mat. There will be eight mats in two separate gyms for each round of the tournament. The teams that will be on hand for the Brawl are: Sky View, Preston, Logan, Mountain Crest, Viewmont, Salem Hills, Bountiful, and Morgan.
This year’s Sky View varsity wrestling team is made up of the following boys:
- 103 lbs. Skyler Jones
- 112 lbs. Anthony Munoz
- 119 lbs. Willie Gillcrest
- 125 lbs. TJ Thacker
- 130 lbs. Taylor Redd
- 135 lbs. Brandon Burger
- 140 lbs. Abraham Herrera
- 145 lbs. Braden Anderson
- 152 lbs. Graham Parkinson
- 160 lbs. Josh Jones
- 171 lbs. Tanner Stevenson
- 189 lbs. Chet Anderson
- 215 lbs. Klay Kelsey
- 285 lbs. Caleb Hull
The Sky View team finished 11th out of 24 teams that traveled to a tournament in Evanston, Wyoming earlier this season. In a tournament at Roy High School earlier this season the Sky View team finished with 61 wins to 48 losses. Braden Anderson finished that tournament at 8-0, while Tyson Holden, Chet Anderson, and Klay Kelsey each finished 7-1, and Abraham Herrera finished 6-2 to lead the Bobcats.
The team also finished 6th in a tournament at Weber High just before the holiday break, and in a match against Logan just before the break the Bobcats were only down by 5 points going into the final match of the night. A pin could have sealed the deal for Sky View, however in the match that stretched through most of the three periods Klay Kelsey, who battled valiantly, was pinned late in the third period which resulted in a 43-32 victory for Logan.
Braden Anderson is the returning 4A State Champion at the 145 pound weight class and will look to repeat as champion at this year’s state tournament. The boys wrestling team returns a host of other experienced wrestlers and look to do well for the rest of this season. With impressive wins this season the Sky View team looks to have a very productive Bobcat Brawl and bring the hopes of head coach Kyle Wright to fruition in sending several more wrestlers to the state tournament, where Wright hopes that several of the boys will place this year.
