Sky View posts first region win against Grizzlies
The Sky View boys used their size and shooting to get the rivalry win over Logan Wednesday night, 57-39. Junior guard Riley Knowles got the Bobcats off to a hot start, hitting back-to-back three pointers to score the first six points of the game, something head coach Kevin Anderson said is good for his team.
“It was nice to come out and get off to a quick start,” Anderson said. “Riley knocked down a couple threes there in that first quarter. We were able to find him against that zone and it makes it nice when the shots are going.”
Knowles would score 9 of his 11 points in the first quarter, helping his team to a 15-4 lead after one. Sky View senior Grayson Moore led all scorers with 16 points in the game, in addition to handling a tough defensive assignment.
The Bobcats limited Logan to an average of 6 points during the first three quarters. The Grizzly duo of guards in Sage Nyman and Kerby Olsen, who have been the biggest scoring threat for Logan this season, were held to a combined 8 points in the first half.
Moore said he just tried to keep the ball out of Nyman and Olsen’s hands.
“We just tried to deny (Olsen) the ball and Sage Nyman,” Moore said. “We just tried to make other people hurt us. Everyone else stepped up great too that was guarding them.”
Logan scored over half of their points in the final 8 minutes. At the beginning of the fourth quarter, the score 39-18, Sky View was able to hold off the fourth quarter run by the Grizzlies to seal the victory. Knowles said the defensive effort and hustle won the game for the Bobcats.
“Coach (Anderson) said defense was the key,” Knowles said. “He gave me a goal to stick to Sage Nyman as good as I could and I thought I did an all right job.”
Nyman would add 6 points to the Grizzly total, while fellow guard Olsen led the team with 11.
Another big difference in the game was the significant size advantage the Bobcats had over Logan. While four Grizzlies are listed at 6-foot-4, Sky View has six players who match or exceed that height. Knowles, standing at 5-foot-8 said his teammates’ size helps win games.
“We can dominate the boards and get extra second chance points,” Knowles said. “That’s a positive thing for our team because we do a lot better against smaller teams.”
Moore, who stands at 6-foot-1, said the hot start in the beginning of the game set the tone for the win.
“That’s how we should be playing the whole season,” Moore said. “This one was big. I mean we needed a win. We started 0-2 in region. We needed this win if we’re gonna make a run for the region championship.”
The win comes at an important time for Sky View, who came off of a couple of losses to Mountain Crest and Bonneville. Both Sky View and Logan came into the game with an 0-2 region record. Anderson said it was a big win for the Bobcats.
“Either us or Logan were gonna go 0-3 in region,” Anderson said. “This was a big game. Winning on the road at Logan, it’s a big win for us, we’ll take it.”
Sky View will next face Box Elder in Smithfield on Friday, Jan. 14 at 7 p.m.
