Bobcats blow past Lakers in second half
Sky View used post play and shooting to come up with a win Wednesday night over Bonneville, 67-49. Bobcat junior center Casey Oliverson scored the first six points of the game and finished the first quarter with 12.
The first four field goals for the Lakers were 3-pointers all shot by four different players. After one, the score was 16-17 Bonneville.
Sky View head coach Kevin Anderson said the first quarter had him a little worried.
“They came out on fire and shooting a lot of threes and a lot of them were going in,” Anderson said. “(Oliverson) scored well for us that first quarter and I thought he did a good job on the boards. I thought we got him the ball when he was open.”
Oliverson led all scorers with 21 points.
The entire first half was close, but the second half was when things went well for the Bobcats. Junior guard Riley Knowles hit 3 shots from beyond the arc in the third quarter which helped his team to a 44-36 lead after the third quarter.
“I missed my first three,” Knowles said. "I was like ‘oh great,’ but I had to keep shooting because they left me open. They started to go down in the second half and I’m surprised they left me that open so you have to take advantage of it.
In the fourth quarter the Bobcats ran away with it as they scored 23 points in the last 8 minutes. Anderson said he was proud of his defense, which moved into a 2-3 zone in an attempt to limit outside shots. Bonneville did not make a single three-pointer in the last quarter.
Anderson said: “We withstood that little run they went and made a couple little adjustments and ran with it. Contested them more in the second half and not give up so many shots around the arc. Proud of our defense, they stepped up, but especially that second half. We were able to get some rebounds and a couple steals and things like that and led to some easy baskets on the other end.”
Knowles said it is big for his team to be able to score in transition, and his teammates’ post presence is what won the game.
“Oh yeah, when we run the floor we’re dangerous,” Knowles said. “Our bigs can run the floor and we just flat out beat them down the floor and got easy layups.”
Oliverson also said running up and down the court helped Sky View win the game.
“We ran harder than them,” Oliverson said. “Gotta keep runnin faster than them everytime down the court. Ran harder in the second half, sprinted. We got a good hustle from everyone.”
The win brings Sky View to 9-4. The Bobcats will travel to Logan on Friday, Jan. 28 to take on the (5-8) Grizzlies.
