Alvey shoots Lady Bobcats to win over Logan
Sky View junior Whitney Alvey came off the bench and hit 3 three-pointers in the second quarter in her team’s win over region rival Logan on Thursday night, 58-44.
Alvey had 13 points to lead all scorers, 12 of which went up in the second quarter. In addition to the threes, the 5-foot-8 forward made another long jump shot from just inside the arc, helping her team to a 37-19 lead at the end of the first half.
When asked about the game, Alvey said it was a good bounce-back win.
“Just shoot when it comes to you when it’s open,” Alvey said. “We played great as a team. Hustle was there, everything was there. It looked good. Shots were falling.”
Alvey wasn’t the only deep threat in the game. The Bobcats made 13 shots from beyond the arc as junior Dannika Webb and senior Maury Beorchia had 12 points apiece, all from three-point baskets.
Sky View head coach Paul Hansen said he had to call time-out to back the girls off.
“It was lights out,” Hansen said. “You can shoot yourself out of a game, but it really opens up the game of basketball when you have somebody that can hit the three consistently, especially when you get more than one girl. Tonight, they’re good shooters and they really shot well.”
Because the game became so spread out, center Linsey Walker was able to get things done in the paint. The 6-foot-1 center finished the game with 12 points.
Hansen said there could have been more production inside were it not for some adjustments in the second half.
“We had them stretched out there,” Hansen said. “We tried a few things differently in the second half and down the road that maybe wasn’t quite as successful at getting what we wanted. (Logan) likes to pack it in and our shooting has been streaky but we have good shooters and tonight showed that.”
The win brings Sky View to 9-7. They next travel to Brigham City to face the (4-12) Box Elder Bees on Tuesday, Feb 1 at 7 p.m.
