Close game against Mustangs ends in disappointment for Lady Bobcats
SMITHFIELD — The Sky View girls fell in close game to first place region rival Mountain Crest Tuesday night, 58-52. Junior guard Dannika Webb led all scorers with 16 points and three 3-pointers in the loss followed by fellow guard Maury Beorchia and forward Maddie Day with nine points each.
Mountain Crest’s junior guard Emily Moore led the way for the Mustangs with 11 points off of the bench. Senior forward Jordi Willden and junior center Karlee Kartchner also scored in double-figures with ten apiece.
Day had seven points in the first quarter alone. As soon as she substituted into play, she grabbed a steal and took the ball coast to coast for her first layup of the game. On the ensuing possession, she hit a 3-pointer and Sky View was ahead after eight minutes, 17-13.
Mountain Crest came roaring back in the second quarter, going on an 8-2 run to get things back into the game and end the half at 28-27, Sky View ahead by one.
Sky View head coach Paul Hansen said the loss stings for him, regardless of the rivalry.
“There in the first half we were up six or eight,” Hansen said. "We get an easy look to go up ten and we don’t get it. That’s kinda been our Achilles heel all season.
Sky View was held scoreless in the third quarter until 4:21 left when Webb made a steal and hit a breakaway layup.
The Mustangs ran away with the game in the final quarter, making another 8-0 run through the first three minutes, 41-51. With just four minutes remaining, Mountain Crest played keep-away from the Bobcats. Webb hit an NBA-range trey to pull within 11 points, but it was not enough for Sky View.
“We couldn’t have asked for any more,” Hansen said. “It was a great game. We fought hard from the start to the end against a great team.”
Mountain Crest clinched first place in Region 5 with the win and has gone perfect in region play with just two games remaining.
Sky View will next hit the road to take on Bonneville on Thursday, Feb. 10 at 7 p.m.
