Smithfield woman will do community service for stealing phone

LOGAN—In lieu of spending two days in jail, a Smithfield resident was sentenced to 16 hours of community service for her guilty plea to charges of theft. Kristi Phillips, 23, was convicted of theft of a cell phone, a Class B misdemeanor, at the Bridgerland Applied Technology campus on Nov. 4.

Judge David Marx of Logan City Justice Court ruled that along with the community service hours, Phillips must pay a fine of $623. Her 16 hours are to be completed by Dec. 30.

Phillips was placed on 12 months probation with Professional Probation Services, Inc. As per probation rules, she must keep the court and PPSI informed of her correct address and phone number. She is not to violate any laws or associate herself with any known criminals. Phillips must pay any fees associated with probation as well as restitution for any jail time she may end up serving, which is currently $45 per day.

Phillips will return to court for her probation review on Aug. 18, 2011.
