The Cache school district faces a $2.4 to $4.7 million shortfall for the 2010-11 school year. Thursday evening the Cache board of education began discussing spending cuts and possible tax increases to cover the shortfall.
The Cache County Board of Education will meet Thursday evening to consider: naming the new elementary schools in Nibley and Smithfield; policy regarding bullying and hazing; revised retirement policy; 2010-2011 school fees. The board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at 2035 North 1200 East, North Logan. It is open to the public.
Cache County School District has posted on their home page a link for patrons to give input for the budget cuts that must happen for next school year. The Cache County School Board will hold their study session meeting Thursday evening. On the agenda: bullying policy, retirement benefit, 2010-11 school fees, legislative report, budget discussion, CEA negotiated termination / retirement benefit, joint use agreement with Nibley, school board convention report.
The Cache County School Board’s regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m. On the agenda for consideration: Superintendent and business administrator salaries, 6-8 and 10-12 grade graduation requirements, student mental health policy. The school board will also recognize the School Teacher of the Year for Sky View, Mtn. Crest, Cache High, South Cache, North Cache and Spring Creek.
New boundaries for north and south elementary schools were approved Thursday night by the Cache County school board. The boundaries — labeled “Option 1” on the CCSD website — will go into effect starting this fall for the 2010-2011 school year.
The Cache County School Board is planning to finalize the boundaries of Greenville, North Park, Summit, Sunrise and the new Smithfield elementary school tonight. According to posted agenda the board will meet at 4:30 p.m. in a study session to discuss the school boundaries. Then at 5:30 p.m. during their regular meeting it is expected they will act on the boundary changes.
On Thursday, school board Superintendent Steve Norton met again with parents and community members regarding the proposed boundaries for the five northern Cache Valley school district elementary schools. This time they met at Greenville Elementary to focus on Hyde Park and North Logan’s schools. The superintendent opened the meeting with the same explanations on school boundaries that he gave to the Smithfield community at Tuesday’s meeting. The school board tries to make neighborhood schools available to the children, but with an area the size of our district, that’s not always possible.
Superintendent Steve Norton began Tuesday evening with an explanation of how the district goes about setting boundaries. “The first thing you need to understand is we are a district that does not have neighborhood schools,” said Dr. Norton to the roughly forty attending the public meeting over proposed boundaries for five north Cache elementary schools. “We have schools located in some neighborhoods, but we are a community of so many different communities that we can’t have a school in every neighborhood.”
Two public hearings are scheduled over proposed boundaries for north Cache elementary schools. With a new school opening next year and the change of all elementary schools to K-5, boundaries will be set for Sunrise, Summit, Greenville, and North Park. Two options are currently presented on the the district website.
The Cache County School District has updated the proposed boundary maps for North Park, Greenville, Sunrise, and Summit elementary schools as well as the new Smithfield school expected to be in use next year. With the school board decision to switch all elementary schools to K-5, the new boundaries are per school instead of an overlay.
The Cache school board let their original decision stand to switch Sunrise, Summit, North Park and Greenville elementary schools to K-5. Two weeks ago the school board listened to a room full of citizens express their opinion over the change. Many were for it. More were against it. Thursday evening the board discussed delaying the change however it never came to a vote.
Final action over grade configuration at northern Cache elementary schools is expected Thursday evening. The Cache school board will discuss whether to keep their original decision to switch Sunrise, Summit, North Park and Greenville elementary schools to K-5 or whether to switch back to split schedules of K-2 and 3-5.
A crowd of parents and community members living within the Cache County School District boundaries joined the school board’s study session on Thursday evening to voice opinions on the potential impending elementary school configuration change. At the last school board meeting, the vote to change all of the Smithfield elementary schools to a Kindergarten through 5th grade configuration passed, but because of outcry from some community members, the board is revisiting the issue.
The Cache County School District board of education meets this evening to discuss the elementary school grade configurations and new boundaries. The board had previously decided to change all north valley elementary schools to K-5. This was against the recommendation by Superintendent Norton and the a opinion ballot sent to parents for the affected schools. Tonight will only be a discussion of the matter. No action will be taken until the next school board meeting later this month.
NORTH LOGAN—The Cache County School Board heard from three members of the community tonight to speak regarding the configuration of the elementary schools that serve Smithfield (Summit, Sunrise, Greenville and North Park). Two of the community representatives were parents of affected students, one was a former teacher in Logan School District, and all three presented strong opinions toward configuring all of the elementary schools for Smithfield to contain Kindergarten through 5th grades.
The grade configuration for northern elementary schools should be approved tomorrow night by the CCSD Board of Education. Currently Sunrise and North Park elementary schools serve grades K-2 while Summit and Greenville elementary schools serve grades 3-5. The new elementary school under construction in Smithfield will have to be a k-5 school. The school district administration sent ballots to parents asking if they would prefer changing all elementary schools to K-5. The overwhelming majority of those who responded want to keep the current arrangement. The school board will make the final decision tomorrow night during their regular school board meeting.
The Cache County School Board met for a study session last night. The meeting was well attended by patrons and members of the school district. Each member of the school board was in attendance, as well as the business administrator and the superintendant.
