Farm fresh in Richmond

Richmond City and Rockhill Creamery will host a farmers market again this summer. The Harvest Market at Rockhill will give valley residents and visitors the opportunity to sell — and buy — fresh produce, homemade crafts and Cottage Kitchen food items each Saturday at the historic Rockhill farm, 563 S. State St.

Blue Sox double header at Health Days

The Blue Sox opened their season at Health Days with a double-header against the Ogden Cyclones beating them 6-5 and 13-2. It was the end of the fabulous Health Days activities at Forrester Acres. The Lions Club members served Lion Pups as fast as they could make them, children were playing catch behind the stands, and everyone enjoyed the sunny evening.

Health Days continues with the horse show and children’s rodeo. As the day wears on and the activities wind down, many people migrated to the horse arena. A horse show complete with barrel racing and pole racing was followed by a children’s rodeo with mutton bustin’, stick horse racing and more.

Health Days is in full swing at Forrester Acres. The weather threatened rain, but the sun broke through and everyone is having a good time. Booths, food, bounce houses, climbing wall, Navajo tacos. Everyone is having a great time.

Hundreds of parade participants and thousands of spectators turned out for the Health Days parade in Smithfield. Royalty, Sky View band, antique cars, remote controlled airplane, floats and more candy than you can throw. The Smithfield Citizen of the Year, Chad Downs, was the Grand Marshall.

Hundreds flock to Health Days opening breakfast

Over 450 people came to eat breakfast at the fire station Saturday morning. “That’s a hundred more than last year,” said Fire Chief Jay Dee Downs. The the line stretched from the serving table to the door as people waited for homemade pancakes, eggs, hashbrowns, ham and milk.

Nice weather, friends & family kick off Health Days Family Bike Ride

The Family Bike Ride kicked off Health Days week. The weather was perfect at Mack Park — sunny and cool. Over a hundred riders as young as three (usually in trailers) to, well, much older came to enjoy the evening air and have fun with their family and friends. “It’s just to have a good time,” said event organizer Leslie Clegg. The cyclists ride up the canyon on the paved road to the campground and come back. “It’s not a race,” added Clegg. “They come back and they have a drawing on gifts. There’s apples and bananas and all kinds of fun gifts for just coming and having fun.”

Tickets still available for Thursday’s concert. The Smithfield Health Days Committee presents Craig Jessop and the American Festival Chorus for an inspiring evening of music Thursday, May 6 at 7 p.m. in the Sky View High School Auditorium. This highlight of the Health Days celebration is a special fundraising event to raise scholarship money for winners of the annual Health Days Scholarship Program. Tickets are available in advance at Lee’s Marketplace in Smithfield and Logan for $10 per person and at the door the night of the concert for $15 per person. New Health Days Royalty for 2010

Five new girls wear the tiara for the Health Days Royalty of 2010. Jordan Rock, Mallory Sorensen, Elizabeth Wilkey, Stephanie Bland, and Melanie Buchanan were selected from 13 contestants Saturday night. The evening began with an excellent introduction by an A Capella group with no name.

Old Man Winter vs the Easter Bunny

Richmond had the annual Easter Egg hunt on Saturday. It snowed most of Friday night and it was blustery and cloudy on Saturday morning but these conditions did not discourage the Easter Bunny from his important duties. The Richmond Lions club was there to perform the actual hiding of the eggs under the tight supervision of the Easter Bunny. Starting about 7:30 a.m. the Lions began hiding the eggs in the area surrounding Park Elementary School and the Richmond City Park. The snow was just deep enough to almost hide the eggs when they sunk down in the snow.

A packed day at A&W to help a little boy

It was packed at the Smithfield A&W. From the moment they opened the doors Saturday morning until they closed at 10 p.m. the line never stopped. “It was the craziest day I’ve ever seen,” said owner Alex Davies. “We had every crew member and even my parents in to help. We did four days worth of business all rolled into one.” Of course, it was for a good cause. All profits were being donated to help Lee and Maylynn Crosby’s son — Dietrich.

The Who’s are in Smithfield

Image: Who’s a Who at Seuss’s party? — Hundreds of children and parents came to the Smithfield Youth Center to celebrate Dr. Seuss’s birthday and to celebrate reading.

They squirmed, giggled, laughed, ran around, and had a blast. Hundreds of children came to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday Tuesday afternoon at the Smithfield Youth Center. Some dressed up as Seuss characters but even Star Wars Storm Troopers and Winnie The Pooh came. Stories were read, prizes given away and in the end the children left with a brand new book of their very own.

Richmond’s Black and White Days: More movies, no melodrama

RICHMOND—Richmond city is adapting to changing times for its 95th annual Black and White Days. At a meeting Wednesday night of the activities committee, previous successes, failures and new ideas were discussed. The city hopes to bring back the same scale of participation that the celebration had in its early days.

Richmond library board reports circulation boomlet

RICHMOND—The city library board is thrilled over the major growth the library has experienced in the last three years. The number of items checked out yearly has increased by 6,357 since 2007, said librarian Juliene Parrish The library had 1,548 visitors and 4,336 items checked out in January alone.

So he went to Heritage Park and shot these wonderful photographs. Lions Club spaghetti dinner raises money for Haiti

The Lions Club spaghetti dinner took on a dual-purpose Thursday night. Beyond collecting prescription glasses for redistribution to developing countries. The Lions Club is also going to donate all of the night’s proceeds to help reconstruct Haiti. “We had 247 people show up for the spaghetti dinner,” said media representative, Tyler Holst. “We also had about 150 other individuals that paid for tickets, but didn’t show up. This happens each year. Some are just willing to donate to the cause without the [dinner].”

House Votes to Rename Smithfield Post Office in Honor of Hazen Hilly

Washington—Today, the U.S. House of Representatives approved legislation introduced by Congressman Rob Bishop (UT-01), H.R. 3767, to rename the United States Postal Service facility located at 170 North Main Street in Smithfield, Utah as the “W. Hazen Hillyard Post Office Building.” W. Hazen Hillyard was Postmaster in Smithfield, Utah for 29 years (1934 – 1963.)

Group hopes to recreate 1859 Richmond Fort

RICHMOND—A group of former and current members of the community will gather tonight for what they hope will be the first step in the recreation of Richmond Fort. Settlers first arrived in Richmond in the summer of 1859, establishing Richmond Fort the following spring.
