After a long off season with many hours in the weight room, testing skills at passing leagues and inter-squad scrimmages, and a very productive camp the Sky View Bobcat football team is set to take the field tonight in their season opener against the Knights of Northridge High School.

Calling all Sky View Sophomores

Sky View High School is hosting a first-ever Sophomore Orientation a day before the regular school schedule begins. Every Sky View Sophomore should attend. It’s scheduled for Wednesday, August 25 from 7:50 a.m. to 2:35 p.m. Busses will be running.

Former Logan fire chief faces felony burglary, Rx charges

Agenda: Stone Haven Phase 2; Rec department report

The Smithfield City Council will meet Wednesday evening to consider: approval of phase 2 for Stone Haven PUD, street names, Nick Hidalgo’s reimbursement request, property purchase, Brett Daniels recreation department report. The council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. on August 11, 2010 at the new city hall. As always, it is open to the public.

Two hospitalized with hypothermia after Bear Lake rescue

Mitch Dean, 25, of Harrisville, and Jess Jenson, 26, of Smithfield, put on lifejackets and jumped from their rented boat to swim to shore after it started having mechanical problems, said Utah State Parks spokeswoman Deena Loyola. They were about 1 mile north and 2 miles east of the Bear Lake State Park Marina on the Utah side of the lake.

Lillywhite given go ahead for townhouse apartments

David Lillywhite can start work on an 8-unit townhouse style apartment complex at 600 West. Wednesday night the city council approved changing the property zoning from general commercial (GC) to residential multiple (RM). The change finalizes the allowed uses of the long-disputed property.

Richard Hansen memorial golf tournament

One more day left to sign up for the First Annual Richard Hansen Memorial Golf Tournament. Proceeds to benefit the Smithfield Blue Sox. The four-person scramble tournament starts at 8 a.m. an Friday, July 23 at the Birch Creek Golf Course.

Agenda: District transport costs, employee negotiations

The Cache School Board meets Thursday evening to consider: district transportation costs, employee negotiation agreement, 2010 tax rate and the adjusted preliminary budget. This is the only scheduled board meeting for July. The meeting is at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday, July 8 at the Cache County School District offices (2063 N 1200 E, Logan, UT).

Best dam bike ride raises $140,000 for MS research

Utah cyclists raised $140,000 this weekend for Multiple Sclerosis research. The “Bike MS: Harmons Best Dam Bike Ride 2010” was a two-day, all-valley ride. Saturday, riders went as far north as Dayton, Idaho before returning through Rimchond and Amalga to the starting point at the Cache County Fairgrounds. Sunday they went south to Paradise, past Hyrum Dam, through Wellsville, Mendon and back to the fairgrounds.

Woman faces trial over “Hooters” text

“The text said that because of Hansen’s new breast implants, she could now apply for a job at the Hooter’s restaurant. Hansen was offended by the text and went to Smithfield City Police Department with her complaint.” — Marco Ortiz

The long road to amend the PUD ordinance

Public versus private roads are still on the agenda for high density housing in Smithfield. The city council met Wednesday evening to consider approving changes to the Planned Unit Development (PUD) ordinance. These changes included requiring all PUDs to build 40-foot wide public roads — 30-feet pavement curb to curb plus sidewalk on one side. The city would own and maintain the roads instead of allowing privately maintained roads in PUDs.

Primary election results for June 22, 2010

The primary and preliminary election results for June 22, 2010. For Cache County, Mike Lee just edged out Tim Bridgewater for US Senator. State-wide it’s just too close to call. Jon Jenkins and Troy Christensen are definitely on the ballot for the school board election this fall. And Mike Gleed was re-elected as Cache County Recorder.

Agenda: Public roads for Planned Unit Developments

The Smithfield City Council will meet Wednesday to consider: updates to the planned unit development ordinance including requiring public roads for all PUDs, fire protection agreement with Hyde Park, re-approval of final plat for Elk Ridge Estates, and public hearings over budget amendments for the past year and the tax rate for next year.

City budgets adopted for 2010-11

The Smithfield City Council met Monday night for two public hearings over the city budgets. The hearings lasted only a minute or two since no citizens attended the meeting. The council then adopted the 2010-11 city budgets and RDA budget.

Tuesday: Republican primary and preliminary for school board seat

Polls open tomorrow for the Republican primary and for a one-seat preliminary vote for Cache County School Board. Tim Bridgewater and Mike Lee lead the big race for US Senate after they defeated long-time incumbent Bob Bennett at the state convention. A second race between incumbent Mike Gleed and Stan Palmer for Cache County Recorder will also be decided tomorrow.

On Wednesday I saw the fire truck over by the school emptying a water tank truck. I have seen them do this several times. This time it created interesting rainbows.

Lillywhite clears hurdle to build townhouse apartments

David Lillywhite received preliminary approval to rezone his property to build an 8-unit townhouse style apartment complex. The Smithfield Planning Commission voted 5-2 to recommend rezoning the land on 400 West from General Commercial (GC) to Residential Multiple (RM). The change was not without a history of controversy.

Property owner installs power turbines in Summit Creek

“Here’s how it works: 4,000 gallons per minute is diverted from Summit Creek through a pipe, which runs about 50 feet underground before dumping into a cement vault containing the turbines. The water runs through the vault and into a pipe that takes the water back to the creek. The turbines can generate a maximum of 1 kilowatt per hour — together enough to power two homes. Scheduled pay increases survive school district budget cuts

Teacher and employee scheduled pay increases — called steps and lanes — passed in the Cache County School District preliminary budget for 2010-11. Teachers expressed strong opposition to a possible freeze of steps and lanes in the May 21 board meeting. Board members on several occasions also expressed a desire not to make cuts to teacher’s pay — and expected pay — unless they have no alternative. Tuesday evening the Cache School Board passed a budget that cut $3.47 million from expected expenses.

A 5-string good time with Banjoman & Company

Smithfield residents were treated to a night of bluegrass on Saturday as the popular local band Banjoman & Co. played at the city’s weekly Concert in the Park. Consisting of sing-a-longs, popular tunes, and original compositions, the evening’s performances brought smiles and nostalgia to the faces of all who listened.

Tepid agenda opens first council meeting at new city hall

Smithfield’s City Council held the first public hearing in the city’s new government office buildings on June 9th. Citizens and members were to discuss the proposed Ordinance 10-04, an amendment to the Planned Unit Development section of the city Zoning Ordinance; the Council and citizens were also to consider Mayoral authorization to sign an Agreement for Fire Protection and Emergency Response Services with Hyde Park City, but no definite agreements or changes were made to either agendas.

Former Grant Auto Sales owners plead guilty

“Grant Wesley Campbell, 57, of Hyde Park, and his son Bret Wesley Campbell, 37, of Smithfield, each pleaded guilty to 12 misdemeanor charges related to failure to deliver vehicle titles and failure to pay off liens of traded vehicles.”

Agenda: Public hearing for Planned Unit Development ordinance

A public hearing is scheduled Wednesday evening over changes to the Planned Unit Development ordinance. This ordinance governs “high density” housing divisions. The changes proposed by the city council are to require PUDs to create city owned streets instead of narrower private streets. The public hearing is during the Smithfield City Council’s regular council meeting. The council’s only other agenda item is the continuation agreement for fire services with Hyde Park City. The council meeting and public hearing are Wednesday, June 9 at 6:30 p.m.

Don Williams honored for Lions Club service

Long time Smithfield resident Don Williams was honored this week after reaching a significant milestone of serving 50 years as a member of the Smithfield Lions Club. Don and his wife Mary Alice, who have been married for 62 Years, and have lived in Smithfield for 46 Years. He joined the Lions in 1959 and has enjoyed active membership and public service throughout. Don served as President of the Lions in 1972-73, and again in 1987-88. The district governor of Utah came to Smithfield in part, to make the award to Don and recognize his years of service.
