Cache School Board accepts federal jobs stimulus money

Thursday evening the Cache County School Board approved an agreement to accept federal jobs stimulus money. The district is required to only use the money for employee compensation, benefits, retain existing employees, recall former employees, or hire new employees. Troy Pugmire, CEA President, said he read in the paper that some board members wanted to use the money to increase professional development days. Although those days are important, said Pugmire, the teachers are already using their free time to prepare. The teachers would rather see the money used to offset increased insurance costs.

Appeal Authority Officer considered for land use disputes

Who can appeal a decision by the city? The consensus of the city council and those attending last Wednesday’s council meeting was that only a third party, independent of the city, could fairly listen to appeals over city decisions. The council is considering doing away with the Board of Adjustment and replacing it with an Appeal Authority Officer. This officer would act kind of like a judge over land use disputes when a resident wants to appeal a decision made by a city staffer or committee.

Agenda: School teachers of the year

The Cache School Board meets Thursday evening to consider: school teachers of the year recognition, swearing in new board members, trustland amendment requests, U.S. DOE jobs funds. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the district technology center (2035 N 1200 E).

Bobcats win thriller against Bees

After a rough start to Region-5 play, the Sky View boys basketball team had a chance to even their record Friday night, as they hosted the Box Elder Bees. Junior center Casey Oliverson played huge for the Bobcats, as he finished with 16 rebounds and 16 points, including the game winning free-throw to give the Sky View the 45-44 victory over the Bees at Bobcat Gym.

The Lady Bobcats held Box Elder scoreless through the first quarter and coasted to the region win 57-44 Thursday night. After one, Sky View was up 18-0. The first points the Bees were able to put on the board came seconds into the second quarter as senior forward Kaylee Walker hit a trey to get her team going.

Sky View posts first region win against Grizzlies

The Sky View boys used their size and shooting to get the rivalry win over Logan Wednesday night, 57-39. Junior guard Riley Knowles got the Bobcats off to a hot start, hitting back-to-back three pointers to score the first six points of the game, something head coach Kevin Anderson said is good for his team.

Junior guard Dannika Webb dropped 20 points and Sophomore forward Maddie Day added 11 points as the Sky View Bobcats soundly defeated the Logan Grizzlies, 66-47 at Logan Gym Tuesday night. With the win, Sky View improves to 6-5 (4-1 Region 5), while the Grizzlies drop to 7-3 (2-3 Region 5) with the loss.

Agenda: Hunter Meadows Development, business licenses, appeal author

The Smithfield City Council will meet Wednesday evening to consider: approving final plat for 10-lots of the Hunter Meadows subdivision, amending the business license ordinance, appointing members to the Historical Society, listening to a presentation by the tree committee. There will also be a public hearing regarding the repealing the Board of Adjustments and establishing an Appeal Authority. The council meeting time has changed for 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 6 p.m..

Bobcats end year with a bang

The Sky View Bobcats needed to bounce back in a big way after a disappointing 54-52 loss at Highland, Idaho before Christmas break. Sophomore guard Ty Nielsen, who had been averaging five points a game, came off the bench to score 12 points and swipe three steals to lead the Bobcats over the Morgan Trojans, 57-38.

Lady Bobcats hold off Box Elder Bees

The Lady Bobcats outlasted a third quarter comeback by Box Elder Thursday night, winning by a score of 60-47. Junior guard Dannicka Webb had 5 points in the first quarter to get Sky View started with a 17-6 lead. Bobcat leading scorer Tara Goldman said her team worked hard to get that lead.

Cache School Board rejects land purchase

The Cache County School Board rejected a proposal to buy 40-acres of land on the south end of the valley. Superintendent Steven Norton said there was an opportunity that deserved looking into. However, they felt there were some issues that were unresolved so the board decided to pass.

Just seconds after the Bobcats won the tipoff, senior guard Grayson Moore found junior center Casey Oliverson in an alley-oop dunk for the first score of the game. The play set the tone for how dominant Sky View’s post players would be in the 60-39 win over Pine View Friday night.

No pushing snow into the street

It’s now against the law to push snow into the street. The ban passed by the city council Wednesday evening makes it “unlawful for any person to push, plow, or otherwise deposit snow from private property into the public street.” The reasoning discussed at the council meeting is to improve safety for the city snow plow drivers.

The Smithfield City Council will meet Wednesday evening to consider: Airport master plan, storm water management plan, police station construction contract, plat 3 for Neighborhood Nonprofit Housing Corporation subdivision, business license ordinance, new court clerk. The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. on December 8 at the new city hall.

Bobcat Basketball Season Openers

The Sky View Bobcat Girls and Boys Teams opened up their season with the annual Blue and White Scrimmage on Friday, November 19th. Those games gave the parents and local fans a chance to see both teams in action. The coaches of both teams also got a chance to see their teams in action, and evaluate their progress heading in to regular season match ups that began this week. Between games the fans were treated to several dances put on by groups of young girls that attended the Cheer Camp this year.

Smithfield woman will do community service for stealing phone

LOGAN—In lieu of spending two days in jail, a Smithfield resident was sentenced to 16 hours of community service for her guilty plea to charges of theft. Kristi Phillips, 23, was convicted of theft of a cell phone, a Class B misdemeanor, at the Bridgerland Applied Technology campus on Nov. 4.

Academic standards moving up a grade for Cache schools

Image: Kelly Garcia and Jim Payant — The State of Utah honored two Cache County School District employees with awards. Kelly Garcia received the 2010 Early Childhood Special Educator of the Year and Jim Payant received the 2010 Early Childhood Special Education Administrator of the Year.

Big changes are coming for students of the Cache County School District. Over the next four years the district will implement new core curriculum standards that will change the very structure of how students are taught. Gone are the separate classes of Algebra, Geometry, Algebra II and Pre-Calculus. In it’s place will be high school math courses designed to interleave all these concepts together and build on them during each successive term.

Kellie Garcia and Jim Payant will also be recognized for their contributions to special education. The school board is scheduled to consider: the 2011-12 calendar, a grant presentation, common core standards presentation. Former Logan fire chief to serve 10 days in jail

“Former fire chief Kyle Lindsay’s felony charges have been reduced to misdemeanors and he will spend ten days in jail as part of a plea deal. Lindsay, 41, resigned as fire chief in August after being arrested for a Smithfield burglary case and being suspected of prescription drug abuse.”

Sky View High School students create bite-sized paintings

Emilie Wheeler posted a terrific story about an tiny art project at Sky View: “Two of the school’s art teachers have teamed up to have students participate in a new type of project. Instead of large oil or watercolor paintings or life-size portrait sketches, the students have been working on a smaller scale.”

Sky View honors veterans with assembly, gun salute

Arie Kirk wrote a nice story about the Veteran’s Assembly at Sky View High School Thursday morning: “About 100 veterans — representing the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Air Force — attended the high school program. They were honored in word, song, video and with a 21-gun salute.”

Smithfield becomes the latest city to ban spice

SMITHFIELD—The City Council voted unanimously to adopt the restriction on “spice” Wednesday. The restriction covers manufacturing, distribution, possession or use of the substance known as spice, a product that mimics the effects of marijuana when smoked.

Agenda: Smithfield considering banning spice

The Smithfield Council is considering banning “spice”. An ordinance to ban synthetic cannabinoids is on the agenda for Wednesday’s regular council meeting. Also on the agenda: the audit report, annexation boundary agreement with Hyde Park, appointing members to the Library Board and Historical Society. The council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10 at the new city hall (96 South Main).

Agenda: School considering purchasing real property

The Cache County School Board is holding a private meeting on Thursday to discuss the “Purchase of Real Property”. It’s perfectly normal for school boards to hold executive sessions for these discussions because they involve financial transactions with a third-party. There just isn’t anything else for the school board to discuss at their study session. They’ll meet, have roll call, say the pledge, and go into executive session. So there won’t be anything to see. The board does not vote on anything in executive session. They will likely approve any purchased during the next regular board meeting.

Final Cache County election results

The final results are in from the Cache County elections office. The countywide library opinion got a no from Cache County voters. Jon Jenkins was re-elected to the school board. Republicans did well as usual in Utah and unusually well nationwide. All the Utah constitutional amendments passed.
