RICHMOND—The city’s water tanks just aren’t cutting it anymore, City Council members said Tuesday at the first council meeting of the new year, as plans for a new 2 million-gallon water tank were discussed.

The Cache School Board meets Thursday evening to consider: school teachers of the year recognition, swearing in new board members, trustland amendment requests, U.S. DOE jobs funds. The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the district technology center (2035 N 1200 E).

The Sky View boys used their size and shooting to get the rivalry win over Logan Wednesday night, 57-39. Junior guard Riley Knowles got the Bobcats off to a hot start, hitting back-to-back three pointers to score the first six points of the game, something head coach Kevin Anderson said is good for his team.

The Smithfield City Council will meet Wednesday evening to consider: approving final plat for 10-lots of the Hunter Meadows subdivision, amending the business license ordinance, appointing members to the Historical Society, listening to a presentation by the tree committee. There will also be a public hearing regarding the repealing the Board of Adjustments and establishing an Appeal Authority. The council meeting time has changed for 2011 from 6:30 p.m. to 6 p.m..

The Sky View boys wrestling team squared off against Ogden High School last night and in an overwhelming victory out scored Ogden 84-0.

The Lady Bobcats outlasted a third quarter comeback by Box Elder Thursday night, winning by a score of 60-47. Junior guard Dannicka Webb had 5 points in the first quarter to get Sky View started with a 17-6 lead. Bobcat leading scorer Tara Goldman said her team worked hard to get that lead.

The Cache County School Board rejected a proposal to buy 40-acres of land on the south end of the valley. Superintendent Steven Norton said there was an opportunity that deserved looking into. However, they felt there were some issues that were unresolved so the board decided to pass.

LOGAN—A Smithfield woman pleaded guilty to criminal mischief (failing to remain at the scene of an accident) and driving under the influence of alcohol, both class-B misdemeanors, on Dec. 6 in 1st District Court.

The Skyview High men’s basketball team never led the Warriors of Snow Canyon High Thursday night, losing their first basketball game of the year by a four-point margin, 50-46.

It’s now against the law to push snow into the street. The ban passed by the city council Wednesday evening makes it “unlawful for any person to push, plow, or otherwise deposit snow from private property into the public street.” The reasoning discussed at the council meeting is to improve safety for the city snow plow drivers.

NORTH LOGAN—City Council members had their annual report from Bear River Health Department and the annual fiscal audit Wednesday.

LOGAN—In lieu of spending two days in jail, a Smithfield resident was sentenced to 16 hours of community service for her guilty plea to charges of theft. Kristi Phillips, 23, was convicted of theft of a cell phone, a Class B misdemeanor, at the Bridgerland Applied Technology campus on Nov. 4.

SMITHFIELD—Wednesday’s Planning Commission meeting went to the dogs, literally. Emilia Mendoza requested a conditional use permit for a kennel for her five dogs. Mendoza’s property, located at 249 E. 200 South, has a kennel now but it is built in the wrong place, according to the animal ordinance.

NORTH LOGAN—City Council members Wednesday turned down a proposed ordinance that would have prohibited people from moving snow onto the streets, and finalized an ordinance that defines who can live in a single-family dwelling and puts restrictions on RV parks.

Thursday evening the Cache County School Board will honor seven teachers with School Teacher of the Year awards. Kellie Garcia and Jim Payant will also be recognized for their contributions to special education. The school board is scheduled to consider: the 2011-12 calendar, a grant presentation, common core standards presentation. The board meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. at the district technology center (2035 N 1200) on Thursday, November 18, 2010.

“Former fire chief Kyle Lindsay’s felony charges have been reduced to misdemeanors and he will spend ten days in jail as part of a plea deal. Lindsay, 41, resigned as fire chief in August after being arrested for a Smithfield burglary case and being suspected of prescription drug abuse.”

Emilie Wheeler posted a terrific story about an tiny art project at Sky View: “Two of the school’s art teachers have teamed up to have students participate in a new type of project. Instead of large oil or watercolor paintings or life-size portrait sketches, the students have been working on a smaller scale.”

Arie Kirk wrote a nice story about the Veteran’s Assembly at Sky View High School Thursday morning: “About 100 veterans — representing the Army, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines and Air Force — attended the high school program. They were honored in word, song, video and with a 21-gun salute.”

SMITHFIELD—The City Council voted unanimously to adopt the restriction on “spice” Wednesday. The restriction covers manufacturing, distribution, possession or use of the substance known as spice, a product that mimics the effects of marijuana when smoked.

The Smithfield Council is considering banning “spice”. An ordinance to ban synthetic cannabinoids is on the agenda for Wednesday’s regular council meeting. Also on the agenda: the audit report, annexation boundary agreement with Hyde Park, appointing members to the Library Board and Historical Society. The council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 10 at the new city hall (96 South Main).

SMITHFIELD—Not all of Smithfield’s youth were watching The Office Thursday night. A group of 20 high school students met together as the Mayor’s Youth City Council.

The Cache County School Board is holding a private meeting on Thursday to discuss the “Purchase of Real Property”. It’s perfectly normal for school boards to hold executive sessions for these discussions because they involve financial transactions with a third-party. There just isn’t anything else for the school board to discuss at their study session. They’ll meet, have roll call, say the pledge, and go into executive session. So there won’t be anything to see. The board does not vote on anything in executive session. They will likely approve any purchased during the next regular board meeting.

The final results are in from the Cache County elections office. The countywide library opinion got a no from Cache County voters. Jon Jenkins was re-elected to the school board. Republicans did well as usual in Utah and unusually well nationwide. All the Utah constitutional amendments passed.

SMITHFIELD—Senator Lyle Hillyard met with the City Council Wednesday to address the concerns of the council. The Smithfield native said how thrilled he was to be back in his home city, and had nothing but good things to say about it.
