A couple weeks ago, Chad Downs saw a beautiful, sunny winter day with frosted trees and crystal clear skies. He said he just had take some pictures. So he went to Heritage Park and shot these wonderful photographs. The Smithfield City website has been showcasing our former Mayor’s photographs on the home page and with his permission we are publishing them here for posterity.

It’s a Saturday morning, and thirty high school students are gathered in a Sky View classroom. Half of them are sprawled across desks, their noses buried in books. The other half are animatedly discussing free speech, federalism, healthcare, and a variety of other government related issues. Any outsider stumbling upon such a scene would scratch their head and ask, “What kind of teenagers are these?” Meet Sky View’s 2010 “We the People” team.

H1N1 flu clinic in Richmond

Richmond City will host an H1N1 vaccination clinic on Monday, February 8, 2010 from 2 to 6 PM at the city offices at 6 W Main. This clinic is open to all residents of Cache County regardless of age or other health factors. Bear River Health Department will be administering the vaccine.

Lions Club spaghetti dinner raises money for Haiti

The Lions Club spaghetti dinner took on a dual-purpose Thursday night. Beyond collecting prescription glasses for redistribution to developing countries. The Lions Club is also going to donate all of the night’s proceeds to help reconstruct Haiti. “We had 247 people show up for the spaghetti dinner,” said media representative, Tyler Holst. “We also had about 150 other individuals that paid for tickets, but didn’t show up. This happens each year. Some are just willing to donate to the cause without the [dinner].”

Bobcats win first round in playoffs

Hockey playoffs began Wednesday night for the Bobcats as they took on the Hunter Wolverines. Sky View was lead by goalie Tanton Jeppson with 25 saves in a 3-1 win over a much improved Wolverine team. Ryan Reevs started the Bobcats out by scoring a goal early in the first period assisted by Ryan Carter.

Exciting Basketball—Mustangs visit to Sky View didn’t disappoint

SMITHFIELD—Inter-county rivals Sky View and Mtn. Crest met on the hardwood Wednesday night to face off for the second time this season. Their first meeting was three weeks ago, and the Mustangs won comfortably, 55-40. Wednesday night wasn’t as comfortable for Mtn. Crest, where they had a three-point lead at the beginning of the fourth quarter thanks to the hot hand of Bobcat Tanner Crockett.

Sky View girls win 200 medley at swim regionals

The Region 5 Swim Meet held at Mountain Crest High started off well for Sky View with the girl’s team winning the 200 medley — Mickensi Didericksen, Shaelynn Brodrero, Cassie Wiser, Laura Mortensen. It was full of fast races and most everyone seemed to drop time.

Tough game is heartbreaker for Lady Bobcats

“About what we expected,” said Coach Paul Hansen. “It was a physical contest and a good basketball game. One of the better high school girls games you’ll see.” An accurate assessment for certain. The Sky View Bobcats played the tough Mountain Crest Mustangs in a game that could have ended either way with the lead changing hands all evening. In the end the Mustangs came out on top 43-49.

Sky View cottage meeting Thursday in Newton

Sky View high school administration are holding Cottage Meetings throughout the community. Cottage meetings are informal get togethers with no planned agenda. Come and chat with Sky View administrators about your thoughts, ideas, concerns. Their plan is to simply listen and keep their ears close to the ground and hear from the community. They are looking forward to meeting with parents in the community.

Bobcats win in physical battle

SMITHFIELD—With the first quarter in the books, the Sky View Bobcats trailed the Ogden Tigers, 8-9. Led offensively by Kyler Carlsen and Nick Eskelson, the Sky View Bobcats took the lead in the second quarter, and extended that lead in the second half to defeat the Tigers at home Friday night, 50-37.

It was another blowout for the Lady Bobcats. Thursday night they more than doubled the Ogden Tigers score to end the game 65-29. Amy Andrus almost beat the Tiger’s score by herself with 25 points. Of course, she had a lot of support from her teammates. Dianne Washington turned it double-digits at 11 points and Aubrey Boehme and Nicole Hansen adding 9 each.

Swim team recognizes graduating swimmers

The results of the Sky View vs Ogden swim meet held Thursday afternoon. The final combined team scores were Sky View 240 to Ogden 96. For the women the scores were Sky View 127 and Ogden 40. For the men it was Sky View 113 to Ogden 56. During the half-time break the nine graduating senior swimmers were recognized.

Bobcat boys beat Bees in tough game

The Bobcats got a close win against the Box Elder Bees. Excellent defense kept the score low while the lead changed eight times during the game. The fourth quarter was a nail biter until several fouls by the Bees pushed the score out of range at 53-48 for Sky View.

Photographs tell the story of the blowout Tuesday night. The Lady Bobcats started with a 23 to 1 run against the Box Elder Bees and never stopped. In the end, the score was 92 to 57. Amy Andrus (#51) led the game with 33 points followed by Jenessa Crafts (#12) with 12 points and Aubry Boehme (#42) and Nicole Hansen (#14) with 10 points each. Hansen gave a remarkable 12 assists during the game.

Agenda: Board to set north boundaries tonight

The Cache County School Board is planning to finalize the boundaries of Greenville, North Park, Summit, Sunrise and the new Smithfield elementary school tonight. According to posted agenda the board will meet at 4:30 p.m. in a study session to discuss the school boundaries. Then at 5:30 p.m. during their regular meeting it is expected they will act on the boundary changes.

Richmond council accepts Ward’s resignation

RICHMOND—Councilman Keith Ward resigned from the Richmond City Council Tuesday night, ending the first 2010 council meeting full of hope for a successful year on a sad note. Ward read his official letter of resignation aloud, sticking only to those words as he became emotional, and said how honored he felt to have served his city for so many years with the great people he did. He cited his family, career, and the recent death of his brother, leaving him a ranch to take care of, as his reasons for leaving. “It continues to be a blessing to live here,” Ward said. Mayor Michael Hall and all of the other council members were clearly affected upon receiving the news.

Bulldogs lose in scrap with Bobcats

In what turned out to be one of the more exciting finishes of the year, Sky View Bobcats beat the Judge Bulldogs 3-2 in the last game of the regular season. The game started with some good defense until about halfway through the first period when the Bulldogs scored the first goal of the game. The rest of the first period and most of the second neither team could get anything going. With just over 2 minutes left in the second, Sky View gained some momentum and Jason Blau scored a goal, assisted by Braden Limb and Tanner Gray.

Hyde Park annexation agreement, canal update, new personnel

Newly elected Mayor Darrell Simmons led his first city council meeting Wednesday night. “You know what it means to cut teeth?” asked Simmons of the sizable audience. “We’re cutting teeth tonight.” Everyone laughed and someone in the back added, “Hopefully without the crying.” The council considered many items including an agreement with Hyde Park over annexation, a proposal by the county to require permits for events using county land, and an update on the canal reconstruction.

Similar concerns raised at second boundary meeting

On Thursday, school board Superintendent Steve Norton met again with parents and community members regarding the proposed boundaries for the five northern Cache Valley school district elementary schools. This time they met at Greenville Elementary to focus on Hyde Park and North Logan’s schools. The superintendent opened the meeting with the same explanations on school boundaries that he gave to the Smithfield community at Tuesday’s meeting. The school board tries to make neighborhood schools available to the children, but with an area the size of our district, that’s not always possible.

Parents discuss boundary concerns with administration

Superintendent Steve Norton began Tuesday evening with an explanation of how the district goes about setting boundaries. “The first thing you need to understand is we are a district that does not have neighborhood schools,” said Dr. Norton to the roughly forty attending the public meeting over proposed boundaries for five north Cache elementary schools. “We have schools located in some neighborhoods, but we are a community of so many different communities that we can’t have a school in every neighborhood.”

Bobcats fall to the Panthers

Sky View Bobcat hockey team played a tough Northern Utah independent team Monday night but fell in the end 4-6. Sky View led early but the Panthers came back from 2 down to tie the game at 4. Then they took the lead at the end of the second period. A couple of late penalties in the third period hurt the Bobcats chances of a come back and a empty net goal with a minute twenty left in the game sealed the game for the Panthers.

Simmons takes oath as new mayor of Smithfield

Darrell Simmons took the oath of office Monday night as the new mayor of Smithfield. He was joined by new city councilwoman Barbara Scholes Kent and by returning councilwoman Kris Monson. “This is about the only time I get to tell the mayor what to do,” joked City Recorder Dean Clegg as he instructed the trio to raise their arm and repeat the oath of office as he read it to them. Family, friends, citizens and city employees watched as the three finished their oath and became officers of the City of Smithfield.

New proposed north elementary boundary maps now online

The Cache County School District has updated the proposed boundary maps for North Park, Greenville, Sunrise, and Summit elementary schools as well as the new Smithfield school expected to be in use next year. With the school board decision to switch all elementary schools to K-5, the new boundaries are per school instead of an overlay.

North Cache elementary schools will switch to K-5 next year

The Cache school board let their original decision stand to switch Sunrise, Summit, North Park and Greenville elementary schools to K-5. Two weeks ago the school board listened to a room full of citizens express their opinion over the change. Many were for it. More were against it. Thursday evening the board discussed delaying the change however it never came to a vote.

Bobcats hunt down Wolverines

The Sky View Bobcat hockey team beat the Hunter Wolverines last night 10 to 1. Sky View was led by Tanner Gray with 4 goals and 2 assists, and goalie Tanton Jeppson had 20 saves. Others scoring goals were, Jake Hill, Ian Palfreyman, Braden Limb, Ryan Reevs, Ethan Crossley, and David Nelson. Those adding assists were Adam Snow, and Sam Jarvis with 2 each, Ian Palfreyman, Mark Burch, and Braden Limb with one each.

Airport presentation asks for zoning overlay in south Smithfield

A zoning overlay to help protect the airport was requested at the Smithfield City Council meeting Wednesday night. Kelly Gillman of CRSA and Shawn Shuler of J-U-B Engineers, Inc. presented updates to the Logan-Cache Airport master plan. One of the concerns is how the air traffic is impacted by south Smithfield. Developments with lots of bright lights or tall building can cause problems for aircraft landing or taking off. They recommended the city adopt an overlay ordinance to protect against developments which encroach on the airport.

Seven bands battle it out at Sky View

Last Thursday the Sky View Auditorium was anything but quiet. Inside, tension was building as bands were preparing to jam their hearts out in front of three amazing judges. The judges for this event were Jared Allen, Chris Hampton, and Keith Larsen. The extravagant Mr. Reeder was the host for the evening. His hilarious remarks only added to the show.

Bobcats tie Cache Valley Wild in goalie exhibition

The Sky View Bobcat hockey team played Cache Valley Wild to a tie of 0-0 Monday night. The game was up and down with both goalies playing extremely well. Goalie Tanton Jeppson had 22 saves for Sky View while Mason Dudschus had 15 saves for the Wild.

Strong opinions expressed over elementary school configuration

A crowd of parents and community members living within the Cache County School District boundaries joined the school board’s study session on Thursday evening to voice opinions on the potential impending elementary school configuration change. At the last school board meeting, the vote to change all of the Smithfield elementary schools to a Kindergarten through 5th grade configuration passed, but because of outcry from some community members, the board is revisiting the issue.

The Cache County School District board of education meets this evening to discuss the elementary school grade configurations and new boundaries. The board had previously decided to change all north valley elementary schools to K-5. This was against the recommendation by Superintendent Norton and the a opinion ballot sent to parents for the affected schools. Tonight will only be a discussion of the matter. No action will be taken until the next school board meeting later this month.

Smithfield woman a suspect in burglary, theft, forgery case

SMITHFIELD—A 20-year-old Smithfield woman was arrested and booked into the Cache County Jail on counts of burglary, theft and forgery. Loren Hansen was arrested by detective Wes Land of the Logan City Police Department on Nov. 19. She was released after posting bail.

Starting off on the right foot

SMITHFIELD—It was a complete effort Tuesday night in Smithfield as the varsity, junior varsity and sophomore Lady Bobcats chalked up wins against the visiting Skyline Eagles. The varsity squad, behind a game-high 17 points from point guard Nicole Hansen, edged out the bigger Skyline team, 58-49.

Smithfield elementary schools to change to K-5

NORTH LOGAN—The Cache County School Board heard from three members of the community tonight to speak regarding the configuration of the elementary schools that serve Smithfield (Summit, Sunrise, Greenville and North Park). Two of the community representatives were parents of affected students, one was a former teacher in Logan School District, and all three presented strong opinions toward configuring all of the elementary schools for Smithfield to contain Kindergarten through 5th grades.

Postal truck flips in two vehicle accident

SMITHFIELD—No one was injured in a two vehicle accident that flipped a postal truck on it’s side last evening. “The red car hit, broadsided the mail truck,” said Todd Elwood who witnessed the accident at the intersection of 300 South and 100 West. “You can see where it spun around on two wheels and then it just tipped over.”

Haunted mansion owners to work with city to improve building

RICHMOND—The hotly debated future of the oldest living factory in the state of Utah remained undecided following Tuesday night’s City Council meeting. Originally a cheese factory, and most recently home to the Haunted Mansion, the 106-year-old building at 130 South 500 West has long failed to comply with county building codes, thus preventing its owners from obtaining business licenses on the property.

Night of Giving tickets still available

Tickets are still available for the Night of Giving. The 3rd annual benefit starts with a prime rib dinner by Culinary Concepts followed by a Christmas tree auction of trees decorated by local businesses. The Greater Smithfield Chamber of Commerce reports that last year $12,000 were raised to help buy toys, food and some clothing for families in need. This year there will also be a raffle for a beautiful tree by Sugar and Spice. The benefit will be held this Saturday at 6 p.m. in the commons area at Sky View High School. Tickets are $25 per person or $45 per couple and can be purchased at Lee’s Marketplace at the service desk.

Agenda: Board ready to approve elementary grade configurations

The grade configuration for northern elementary schools should be approved tomorrow night by the CCSD Board of Education. Currently Sunrise and North Park elementary schools serve grades K-2 while Summit and Greenville elementary schools serve grades 3-5. The new elementary school under construction in Smithfield will have to be a k-5 school. The school district administration sent ballots to parents asking if they would prefer changing all elementary schools to K-5. The overwhelming majority of those who responded want to keep the current arrangement. The school board will make the final decision tomorrow night during their regular school board meeting.
