The Smithfield City council will hold their regular meeting tomorrow to consider: a proclamation declaring April as Child Abuse Prevention Month, final plan approval for Smithfield Ridges Planned Unit Development, amending animal control regulations to “reflect increase impound time requirement”.

Agenda: Budget meeting tonight

The Smithfield City council will meet tonight to discuss the city budget for 2012-13. The meeting could be considered a workshop where city council members can “give/receive input” for the budget. Although no action will be taken during the meeting, it is an enlightening meeting to attend if you want to know more about the city finances and how money is allocated.

Sky View puts on another stellar show with Beauty and the Beast

In the mid 1700’s the fairytale of a spoiled prince that is turned into a hideous beast, by a spurned enchantress, spread its way throughout France.  Then in 1991 Walt Disney popularized the fairytale in his musical adaptation called Beauty and the Beast.  This week and next the Sky High Players are blowing the roof off the auditorium at Sky View with their rendition of the musical.

Valley housing projects’ fate hangs on Obama’s 2012 budget

SMITHFIELD — Last spring the Smithfield City Council approved construction of Park Place subdivision, promoted and sustained by the Neighborhood Nonprofit Housing Corp. The subdivision has since been completed and is now successfully occupied. Earlier this year, Nibley City Council unanimously supported accommodations needed to prepare their city for similar NNHC developments.

Agenda: Stone Haven final plat, two public hearings

Two public hearings are scheduled for tomorrow’s city council meeting. The first is over an incentive proposal for planned unit developers. If the developer adds upgrades to their development — brick siding, a clubhouse, covered parking — they can increase the number of units for the development. In the case of a 90-unit development, they could add maybe six more. If the city council passes the amendment, it will be up to the Planning and Zoning commission to work out the details on what features would be rewarded.

Bobcats rebound to beat Bees

Smithfield, Utah — The Sky View boy’s basketball team rebounded from its loss at Logan with a win over the Bees of Box Elder High, 57-49 Thursday night. Senior Casey Oliverson scored a game-high 19 points in the win.

Sky View boys fall to rival Logan in nail-biter

Logan, Utah — In a battle between Cache Valley Rivals, the Sky View boy’s basketball team fell to Logan High in a thriller, 77-75, on Tuesday. Junior Jalen Moore led all scorers with 22 points, and junior Ty Nielsen added 17, but the Bobcat’s last-second shot fell short at the buzzer.

Agenda: Gas company discussion; planning commission appointments

The Smithfield City Council seems to have a fairly routine meeting scheduled for Wednesday evening. They plan to consider: setting the fee schedule for 2012, adopting 2012 city council meeting rules of conduct, signing an agreement over the northern canal, approving Smithfield Implement’s request to put signs on the grass in front of the store. They are also planning to appoint planning commission members and they will have a discussion with Steve Krebs from Queststar Gas Company.

Planning commission reconsiders Smithfield animal laws

SMITHFIELD — Kris Monson, a City Councilwoman for 10 years, stood before the Planning Commission Wednesday night to propose modifications to Smithfield’s animal rights ordinances. “I’m just going to propose an idea,” Monson said. “If you don’t like this, I’m not going to work very hard.”

Event: BYU Young Ambassadors coming to Sky View this Saturday

BYU’s Young Ambassadors are coming to Sky View High School on Saturday, January 21 at 7:15 pm. The show will take place in the Sky View auditorium. Slow start too much for Lady Bobcats

Smithfield, Utah — It was a rough night for the Sky View High girl’s basketball team as it fell to Weber High 58-42 Thursday night. Senior guard Dannika Webb led the Bobcats with nine points, but a sluggish start proved too much to overcome.

Would you be a good cop? Smithfield police talk about requirements

SMITHFIELD — Chief Johnny McCoy has built the Smithfield City Police Department from the ground up. In 2000, he left his job as a lieutenant in Evanston, Wyo. to help start the department. McCoy now has eight full-time officers and three part time reserves (volunteers). McCoy has been in law enforcement since 1981, and police chief since 2000.

Agenda: Hearings for budget, airport zoning, and chickens

Three public hearings are planned for Wednesday’s Smithfield City Council Meeting — one to amend the budget for 2011-2012, the second is about keeping chickens, and a third for the airport overlay zone. The council will also consider the “Recycle Market Development Zone” and appointments to the planning commission.

Sky View fined for athletic recruitment violation

“At a Utah High School Activities Association hearing last week, a panel found that Glenn Mortensen, the school’s head swim coach, was in violation of athletic recruitment rules when he contacted a talented Finnish exchange student-athlete prior to the teen’s arrival at the school.”
