The Smithfield City Council meets this Wednesday evening at 6:30 p.m. Items scheduled for consideration are: phase 2 of the Park Place subdivision (600 W 250 N) by the Neighborhood Nonprofit Housing Corporation, presentation by university students on futures uses of the existing library building, inter-local agreement with Cache County for road repairs, Planned Unit Development handout.

Twelve Angry Women is undoubtably the hardest play the Sky High Players are doing this year. The intensity the all-girl cast must show throughout the performance should be something beyond the years of these young ladies. Yet, they do a wonderful job of showing not just the surface emotion of their roles, but often the subtle undertones of what is actually driving each juror.
Metro State College of Denver, Colorado sent a press release about their three new basketball players including Sky View’s very own, Amy Andrus. They had a few nice things to say about Andrus that would be fun to share with you.
LOGAN—Sky View tied Friday’s matchup with Valley rival Logan, after trailing 3-0 midway through the game. That elation was short-lived, however, when Grizzly sophomore Russell Murphy drove in the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning with a walk-off shot to deep left field.
The Sky High Players put on a great show Wednesday night as they performed Meet Me In St. Louis before a small audience in the intimate Little Theater at Sky View High School. “I loved it,” said Cami Trappett about performing the play before an audience for the first time. “It’s way different. We are so used to not having those laughs. I’ve never been that close to an audience before.”
LOGAN—Judge Thomas Willmore sentenced a Smithfield man to jail time, fines and drug and alcohol rehabilitation Wednesday after telling him he was insufficiently punished for similar offenses as a minor.
SMITHFIELD—After blowing out Valley rival Logan in the first meeting between the two teams, Sky View found the going much tougher the second time around. Grizzly ace Michelle Einzinger struck out 12 batters and senior catcher (and former Bobcat) Melissa Curtis went 3-for-4 from the plate to lead Logan to a 7-5 victory Thursday.
Amy Andrus, a senior at Sky View High School, signed her national letter of intent for Metropolitan State College of Denver. Andrus has accepted a full ride scholarship and is excited to be playing in Denver for the next four years.

Cache County School District has posted on their home page a link for patrons to give input for the budget cuts that must happen for next school year. There is a 16 minute video presentation on parts of the budget—where the money comes from and goes to, a spreadsheet with specific dollar amounts for each type of expenditure in Cache District and a Survey for comments to be received with the following four questions:
The Smithfield Police Department facility will grow from approximately 800 square feet to 5000 square feet after the renovation of the current building is completed. “When the citizens come in, it will be one-stop shopping for law enforcement. It will be easier to find where they need to go to have their needs met,” Chief of Police Johnny McCoy said.
Sky View Lacrosse had an exceptionally great game last night beating Box Elder 20-7. Sky View was lead by Keaton Cluff, Karson Fullmer and Tanton Jeppson with five goals each. Sean Bergeson and Chris Morrill both had two goals, and Jon El Bakri rounded out the scoring with one goal.
The Health Days Scholarship Program will be held April 24th, at 7:00 p.m., in the Sky View Auditorium. There will be 13 young ladies competing for the five positions available to represent Smithfield.
The future of journalism is very important to us at the Smithfield Sun. There are so many challenges facing the industry as we transition from the print medium to the web. This week a panel met at USU to discuss the future of journalism. I normally don’t report items that don’t directly affect the Smithfield area. However, this is very important to the future of this website, journalism and even the our country. Without a free press, we cannot keep our freedoms. So I’m presenting two reports by students at USU who attended the panel.
HYDE PARK—During an emergency preparedness presentation at Wednesday night’s City Council meeting, Brian Potts of the Smithfield Fire Department stressed the need to draw up a formal declaration of a financial cap for disaster management if the city needed to declare a state of emergency.
We want to start a new tradition, recognizing all of the great things happening here at Sky View High School. Today’s recognition will be a little lengthy, and will not include all of the great things that have happened this year, but hopefully will give you and idea of some of the things occurring.
A minor, 4.9 earthquake hit near Randolph, Utah at 5:59 p.m. Thursday evening. The quake was felt by people as far away as Salt Lake City. Logan resident, T.J. Hilton reported on twitter that the floor swayed slightly and the doors rattled for a second. Others report feeling dizzy or feeling their chair sway.
SMITHFIELD—Smithfield City Council voted unanimously to adopt a six-member council form of government (Ordinance 10-02). Councilman Mike Oliverson was not in attendance. Mayor Darrell Simmons said that after a lot of discussion and review, no significant changes were made to the ordinance after the public hearing held on March 9. Mayor Simmons said that under this ordinance, the mayor holds people accountable. “This ordinance is like a house. It will have to be remodeled from time to time, and it may have a few broken windows, but we have to move forward.”
The Sky View Lacrosse team played the defending state champion, Bountiful Braves last night in Bountiful. After a slow start, the Varsity team came out strong in the second half, but came up short in an 8-5 loss.
It looks like Smithfield Recration Soccer has started up their 2010 season. These are a few pictures of the Smithfield Recreation U-10 Grades 3/4/5 game between Vapor (Red) and Slash (blue). After playing for an hour it was tied 1 to 1.
LOGAN—Jesus Patino, 21, of Smithfield was sentenced to 45 days in jail in 1st District Court on Monday.
The Sky View varsity lacrosse team beat West Jordan Saturday 6-2. Sky View was led by Goalie Chris Cannell with 12 saves. Scoring goals for the Bobcats were Sean Bergeson with two, and one each for Caden Sorenson, Chris Morrill, Trevor Kulikowski, and Clayton Walters.
The Smithfield City Council will consider the city management ordinance this Wednesday at their regular meeting. Citizens expressed concerns at a public hearing in March about this ordinance and the powers and duties of the City Manager. The council has the option to continue working on the ordinance, adopting it as-is, or to seek further public input. The council will also consider ordinances about procedures for written minutes and rules of conduct at city council meetings. Mayor Simmons is expected to read a proclamation declaring May 8 as Arbor Day plus there will be reports on the new city offices, changes to the existing building, and the Civic Center upgrade. *[UPDATED: Boy scout proclamation]
No amount of snow could stop children in pursuit of easter eggs. The sun shown on new snow at Mack Park Saturday morning as children and parents waited patiently for the easter egg hunt to begin. And then, all at once, they were off. What took members of the Greater Smithfield Chamber of Commerce all morning to set up was over in just a few minutes. Richmond had the annual Easter Egg hunt on Saturday. It snowed most of Friday night and it was blustery and cloudy on Saturday morning but these conditions did not discourage the Easter Bunny from his important duties. The Richmond Lions club was there to perform the actual hiding of the eggs under the tight supervision of the Easter Bunny. Starting about 7:30 a.m. the Lions began hiding the eggs in the area surrounding Park Elementary School and the Richmond City Park. The snow was just deep enough to almost hide the eggs when they sunk down in the snow.
Sky View students created a huge replica of Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night from breakfast cereal last week. Not only did they create a wonderful project, but they were also a hit on the Associated Press this weekend.
The Cache County School Board will hold their study session meeting Thursday evening. On the agenda: bullying policy, retirement benefit, 2010-11 school fees, legislative report, budget discussion, CEA negotiated termination / retirement benefit, joint use agreement with Nibley, school board convention report.
Sky Views lacrosse team beat the Mountain Crest Mustangs yesterday 13-0. Sky View was led by their goalies Chris “Shield” Cannell and Ethan Crossley. The rest of their defense played an amazing game. Sky Views next game is April 10th against West Jordan at Sky View at 10:30am.
Seniors Shawn Chen, Corey Warren, Wendy Howells; juniors Rebecca Sharp, Cheyanne Petersen, Manuel Garcia; and sophomores Parker Bradford, Robert Merritt, Regina Ward were honored as March 2010’s students of the month at Sky View High School.
The Herald Journal has named their all-star team for high school girls basketball and Amy Andrus is at the top of the list.
The Smithfield City Council is holding their annual budget workshop Wednesday at the Smithfield senior center. According to the agenda “The purpose of the meeting is for members of the City Council to give/receive preliminary input for the preparation of the Fiscal Year 2010/2011 Budget.” The meeting begins at 5:30 p.m. and is open to the public.
RICHMOND—After more than 10 years of actively struggling to meet wastewater standards, Richmond has been recognized by the Rural Water Association of Utah (RWAU) as the city with the most improved water system in Utah.
Saturday evening the Sky View Booster Club held a luau at the Castle Manner Reception and Events Center in Hyde Park. The well attended event was enjoyed by all participants and provided excellent food, splendid atmosphere, and great entertainment.
The pre-season Beet Digger Tournament turned out to be very successful for both the Sky View Varsity and JV teams. The JV team won 3 of their 4 games. The JV team played West Jordan on Friday with a win 4-1, Brighton on Friday, winning 9-2, and Lone Peak on Saturday winning 9-1. They tied the last one against Alta in the semi final round. As Alta had the first goal, they were declared the winner and moved on to the finals. That tie ended the JV’s 20 game winning streak.
It looks like a fairly light agenda for tomorrow’s Smithfield City Council meeting. To be considered: A&D Landscaping permit to move shed, presentation from Child and Family Support Center, proclamation declaring April as “Child Abuse Prevention Month”. The council meets at 6:30 p.m. in the city council chambers at 69 N Main. The meeting is open to the public.
The need for Rocky Mountain Power employees to regularly enter Smithfield customers’ property to read electric meters is coming to an end. Automated electric meters will be installed on the homes and businesses of approximately 16,000 Rocky Mountain Power customers in Smithfield beginning Tuesday. The meter installations are expected to be completed by the end of May.
Sky View’s show choir, Encore, put on a superb show last week. The group of ten girls and ten guys performed hits from big band era to today at the Sky View auditorium. Kicking it off with Footloose they put everything they had into the show. “We are real proud of them, they are amazing,” said John Caldwell. John and his wife, Jen, are co-directors for Encore. “Every year when you think maybe we are going to cut back and do less and less — then you have the show and you think it is totally worth it.”
Three Cache legislative posts will see an inter-party challenge in this year for the Republican nominations. Incumbent Reps. Jack Draxler and Curt Webb are being challenged by fellow Republicans, and in House District 4, Republicans David Butterfield and Teresa Theurer will vie to fill the seat vacated by Rep. Fred Hunsaker.
The Smithfield Planning Commission approved recommendations for a staging area for A&D Landscaping and a fireworks stand at Lee’s Marketplace. They also listened to concerns over the Park Place subdivision which was requesting to move to stage two of their division.
On March 23rd delegates from each local caucus will be chosen to represent you at the state nominating convention in Salt Lake City to determine the nominees for U.S. Senate and other elected offices. It is crucial that you attend your caucus meeting and make your voice heard. The Constitution of the United States mandates all citizens the freedom and the duty to decide who we, the people, want to represent us in our democratic government.
Amy Andrus was picked by the Region 5 coaches as the Most Valuable Player for 2009-2010. Nicole Hansen and Aubry Boehme were also voted for the all-region first team. Amy, Nicole and Aubry also made the Deseret News and the Salt Lake Tribune’s all-state teams.
The Cache County School Board’s regular meeting is scheduled for Thursday at 5:30 p.m. On the agenda for consideration: Superintendent and business administrator salaries, 6-8 and 10-12 grade graduation requirements, student mental health policy. The school board will also recognize the School Teacher of the Year for Sky View, Mtn. Crest, Cache High, South Cache, North Cache and Spring Creek.
The Smithfield Planning Commission meets Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. to consider: amending the “planned unit development” ordinance, phase-2 of Park Place Subdivision, public hearing of Monte Vista 19 lot commercial subdivision at 531 South Main. The commission meets in the city council chambers at city hall.
Sky View Lacrosse continued their preseason by taking all three of their teams to the Boise Table Rock Shootout. Varsity started out with a defensive battle with a local Idaho team from Eagle. They tied 3-3. Their next game against Boise, was a back and forth battle. In the last seconds Sky View pulled off the win 7-6, with a goal from Karson Fullmer.
SMITHFIELD—Allison Pope from Sky View High School learned good grades pay off when she won the Cache Valley-area drawing for a $100 scholarship savings account from Zions Bank’s Pays for A’s program. Pope received the surprise news about the scholarship during the morning school announcements from Zions Bank’s Smithfield branch manager Lynn Godderidge last Wednesday.
It was packed at the Smithfield A&W. From the moment they opened the doors Saturday morning until they closed at 10 p.m. the line never stopped. “It was the craziest day I’ve ever seen,” said owner Alex Davies. “We had every crew member and even my parents in to help. We did four days worth of business all rolled into one.” Of course, it was for a good cause. All profits were being donated to help Lee and Maylynn Crosby’s son — Dietrich.
A group of Cache Valley residents are fighting a proposed ski resort east of Richmond at the mouth of Cherry Creek Canyon. David Chadwick and Logan Checketts presented their plans for the 160-acre Rainey Ranch Ski Resort at the March 4, 2010, meeting of the Cache County Planning and Zoning Commission.
HYDE PARK—Chief Kim Hawkes of North Park Police Department presented the department’s 2010-2011 budget to the City Council Wednesday night. “We didn’t offer any increases in salary last year, and at this point in time we are projecting the same thing,” Hawkes said.
